A Simple FIFO-Based Scheme for Differentiated Loss Guarantees - Technical Report

چکیده
The emergence of the Internet as the de facto communication infrastructure means that it is asked to carry an ever broadening range of application traffic with different requirements. This in turn has stressed its original, one-class, best-effort model, and has been one of the main drivers behind the many efforts aimed at introducing QoS. Those efforts have, however, experienced only limited success because the added complexity QoS introduces is at odds with the scaling requirements of the Internet. This has motivated a number of proposals that have strived to balance the need for service differentiation with the requirement for low complexity that the Internet scale mandates. This paper shares similar goals and proposes a simple scheme, BoundedRandomDrop (BRD), that supports multiple service classes. BRD focuses on loss differentiation, as although both losses and delay are important performance parameters, the steadily rising speed of Internet links, including access links, is progressively limiting the potential impact of delay differentiation. BRD offers strong loss differentiation capabilities with minimal implementation and deployment cost. BRD does not require the specification of a traffic profile, nor does it rely on call admission to control the amount of traffic in different classes. It guarantees each class losses that, when feasible, are no worse than a specified bound, but enforces differentiation only when required to meet those bounds. In addition, BRD is implemented using a single FIFO queue and a simple random dropping mechanism. The performance of BRD is investigated for a broad range of traffic mixes and shown to consistently achieve its goal of effective service differentiation.

An Upper Bound to the Loss Probability in the Multiplexing of Jittered Flows
In the context of Diffserv networks some services should be characterized by end-to-end quantitative QoS guarantees. In order to provide such guarantees to single flows (or flow aggregates), the end-to-end analysis of delay and loss performance in a Diffserv domain is needed. The impact of jitter should be considered in the performance analysis at the successive nodes along the path of a flow (...
متن کاملAn Admission Control with Quantitative Statistical QoS Guarantees for Expedited Forwarding
This paper presents an admission control framework for Expedited Forwarding traffic in a Differentiated Service network. The aim is to overcome the limitations, in terms of achievable efficiency, which are proper of a deterministic "worst-case" based on the zero loss assumption. An admission control procedure is defined which provides quantifiable end-to-end QoS guarantees in terms of maximum d...
متن کاملProportional loss rate differentiation in a FIFO queue
The relative differentiated service model is one of several models proposed for service differentiation in networks [IEEE Network Sept/Oct (1999) 26]. In this model, an assurance is given that ‘higher classes will be better, or at least no worse than lower classes.’ This paper describes a relative loss rate differentiation scheme based on RED. The scheme is used for differentially dropping pack...
متن کاملA Differentiated Pricing Framework for Improving the Performance of the Elastic Traffics in Data Networks
Rate allocation has become a demanding task in data networks as diversity in users and traffics proliferate. Most commonly used algorithm in end hosts is TCP. This is a loss based scheme therefore it exhibits oscillatory behavior which reduces network performance. Moreover, since the price for all sessions is based on the aggregate throughput, losses that are caused by TCP affect other sessions...
متن کاملAn Enhanced RED-Based Scheme for Differentiated Loss Guarantees
Recently, researchers have explored to provide a queue management scheme with differentiated loss guarantees for the future Internet. The Bounded Random Drop (BRD), known as the best existing scheme, is one of such efforts which guarantees strong loss differentiation to the level of traffic in the different service classes. Even though BRD has several benefits such as low complexities and good ...
